Japanese department stores have kimono salons where
high priced outfits may be obtained. There are national
craft societies that exhibit the works of contemporary textile
artists, but by and large, elaborate, embroidered, and painted
kimono are thought of as formal apparel to be worn during
weddings, graduation ceremonies, and other special occasions.
