the 3rd is Hinamatsuri..."The Doll's
Festival", or "Girl's Festival." It is
a day where girls are celebrated and families give thanks
for having daughters. Beautiful dolls called Hina-ningyou
are displayed only on this day, with the dolls
exhibited on elaborate tiered stands. Special rice cakes
for the occassion, called hishi-mochi are also
placed on the stand. Pictured
on the right are two antique hina-ningyou from
the mid-1800's.
